Cougars rise to fourth in team standings in season opener at Squire Creek Country Club
CHOUDRANT, La. – University of Houston senior Santiago De La Fuente fired his third straight sub-par round and finished with a three-day score of 11-under 205 to tie for second following the Final Round of the Argent Financial Classic at Squire Creek Country Club on Tuesday afternoon.
De La Fuente posted a 71 in the Final Round on the 7,105-yard, par-72 course to join UAB's Khavish Varadan in a tie for second and finished two strokes behind medalist Owen Stamper from Middle Tennessee.
It was the seventh Top-10 showing in his Houston career.
Starting off No. 1, De La Fuente moved into red numbers with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 5-6. After a double bogey and three straight pars, he sank two birdies in a 3-hole stretch at Nos. 11-13 and made his final birdie of the tournament on the par-5 17th hole.
As a team, the Cougars finished fourth with a three-day score of 7-under 857.
UAB, Louisiana and Southern Miss tied for first at 855 with Southern Miss winning the three-team playoff. Middle Tennessee (859), UT Arlington (861), Abilene Christian (861), Central Arkansas (862), Louisiana Tech (866) and Rice (870) completed the Top 10.
De La Fuente was one of three Cougars to shoot under par Tuesday. Junior Wolfgang Glawe led the Cougars with a 2-under 70 and tied for 16th at 2-under 214.
Glawe began his day with eight straight birdies before closing his front nine with a birdie. After two straight pars to start his back nine, he sank back-to-back birdies on Nos. 12-13.
Sophomore Ruben Lindsay added a 1-under 71 Tuesday and tied for 44th at 220. The Ayr, Scotland, native tied for team-high honors with five birdies in the Final Round.
Sophomore Hudson Weibel tied for 33rd at 218 while junior Laurenz Schiergen tied for 44th at 220. Playing as an individual, junior Jacob Borow tied for 33rd at 218.

Following the Argent Financial Classic, the Cougars will compete in two different tournaments. Houston will compete as a team at the Wake Forest Intercollegiate at Chicago Highlands Club in Westchester, Ill., on Sept. 18-19.
In a recent addition to the team's schedule, the Cougars will send four student-athletes to compete as individuals at the Papago Individual Event at Papago Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz., on Sept. 18-19.
From there, Houston will face Sam Houston in a 36-hole match play event during the Robert Steele Cup at Golfcrest Country Club in Pearland, Texas, on Oct. 3. This also is a recent addition to the Cougars' fall schedule.
