Sophomore fires bogey-free 67 in Second Round to tie for third after first day; Austyn Reily in fourth at Papago Individual Event
WESTCHESTER Ill. & PHOENIX, Ariz. – University of Houston Men's Golf sophomore Hudson Weibel posted a bogey-free 67 in the Second Round of the Highlands Invitational to lead the Cougars and tie for third following the first day of the Highlands Invitational at Chicago Highlands Club on Monday evening.
Competing in his first season with the Cougars after transferring from Oklahoma, Weibel opened the tournament with a 69 and joined Ben James (Virginia), Michael Brennan (Wake Forest), Virgilio Paz (Missouri) and Colin Adams (Wake Forest) at 8-under 136.
Second-Round play was suspended with six teams needing to complete play.
As a team, the Cougars joined Duke in a tie for fourth at 17-under 559. Virginia held the first-day lead at 549 while host Wake Forest stood in second at 555. Missouri was in third at -20 after the first day with Indiana (-12), Charleston (569), Wake Forest 'B" (-4), Rutgers (578) and Iowa (579) completing the Top 10.
Charleston's Zach Reuland held the individual lead at 11-under 133 with Virginia's Bryan Lee in second at 135. Duke's Jimmy Zheng and Jack Lundin of Missouri were tied for eighth at 138.
Starting the day off No. 10, Weibel quickly moved into red numbers with a birdie on No. 11 and finished his first nine at -3 after birdies on No. 15 and No. 18.
The Dallas native overcame a bogey with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 4-5 to finish the First Round with a 69.
In the afternoon, Weibel sank one birdie on his first nine but opened the second nine with a birdie on the 461-yard, par-4 fourth hole. He added back-to-back birdies on Nos. 5-6 and closed the day with his final birdie at No. 9.
Senior All-American Santiago De La Fuente posted back-to-back 71s and joined junior All-Conference performer Wolfgang Glawe in a tie for 25th at 142. Glawe enjoyed a 69 in Monday's Second Round.
Junior Jacob Lindsay and sophomore Ruben Lindsay were tied for 31st at 143. Lindsay joined Weibel and Glawe for team-low honors after recording a 69 in the morning.
PAPAGO INDIVIDUAL EVENT
In addition to the Highlands Invitational, four Cougars were competing as individuals at the Papago Individual Event at Papago Golf Club on Monday.
Senior All-Conference star Austyn Reily stood in fourth after the first 36 holes at 43-under 138.
Reily started his day on the 7,551-yard, par-71 course on a good note with a birdie on the par-5 first hole but gave a stroke back with a bogey on No. 4. However, he returned to red numbers with an eagle-3 on No. 9 and solidified his place there with birdies on No. 10 and No. 12 around his final bogey of the round.
The Pottsboro, Texas, native added birdies on No. 15 and No. 15 to finish with a 66 and added a 72 in the afternoon session.
Arizona State's Gabriel Salvanera held the first-day lead at 12-under 130 with Texas Tech teammates Tim Wiedemeyer and Ben Gregg in second and third, respectively, at 134 and 137.
Making his collegiate debut, freshman Grant Doggett was tied for 18th at 146 and was joined in that group by jujiro Drew Murdock. Junior Laurenz Schiergen was 33rd at 158.
The Final Round for each tournament begins Tuesday morning.
