Three Southeast Texas meets keep Houston close to home
HOUSTON – The Houston cross country team released its 2023 schedule on Wednesday with three in-state meets on tap including two meets at Texas A&M.
Â
In their first year in the Big 12 Conference, the Cougars will compete in the state of Texas for the first six weeks of the season.
Â
Houston will open the campaign at Lamar's Early Bird Opener on Sept., 1 in Beaumont, Texas. The Cougars have not competed at Lamar since at least the turn of the century.
Â
The Cougars will then compete at Texas A&M back-to-back meets with a month break between races. Houston will compete at the Texas A&M Invitational on Sept. 15 before returning Oct. 13 for Texas A&M's Arturo Barrios Invitational.
Â
Houston will compete at the Big 12 Cross Country Championships on Oct. 27, hosted by Iowa State, which will serve as the university's first Big 12 Championship event.
Â
The Cougars will then compete at the NCAA South Central Regional Championship on Nov. 10 in Fayetteville, Ark. and the NCAA Championships are scheduled for Nov. 18 in Charlottesville, Va.
Â
The Big 12 is a powerhouse cross country conference with Oklahoma State winning the 2012 men's team title. A Big 12 school has finished runner up at the last two men's NCAA Cross Country Championships and three times since 2011.
