Tennis Prepared for American Championships

Cougars open action 11 a.m. CT, Wednesday against East Carolina
ORLANDO, Fla. – The University of Houston Tennis program opens 2023 postseason action at the American Athletic Conference Championship 11 a.m. CT, Wednesday, from the USTA National Campus.
For a second consecutive year, seven-seed Houston (13-8) will face No. 10-seed East Carolina in the first round at the American Championship. The Cougars advanced to quarterfinals at the 2022 American Championship after defeating the Pirates, 4-0 (April 20, 2022).
The winner of the match will advance to quarterfinals held at 11 a.m. CT, Thursday, against No. 2-seed UCF. Semifinals will be held on Friday at 2 p.m. CT, and the championship match will be held at 3 p.m. CT Saturday. The final can be seen on ESPN+.

SCOUTING THE PIRATES
· East Carolina is in its third season under Head Coach Kirstin Burgess.
· The Pirates are 9-9 on the season.
· In its last matchup, East Carolina defeated VCU, 4-3 (April 6, 2023).
· The Cougars own the all-time series, 4-1.
SEASON SUCCESS
Four Cougar individuals finished with double-digit wins during the regular season: Laura Slisane (11), Gabriela Cortes (10), Azul Pedemonti (10) and Sophie Schouten (10). During the season, Houston combined for 62 individual wins and finished well above .500 in singles action.
In doubles action, Pedemonti and Sonya Kovalenko led the team with nine victories on the year mainly in the third spot.
TOURNEY HISTORY
The Cougars have played 16 matches in the past eight American Athletic Conference Championships. Houston owns an 8-8 record in the tournament and has advanced to the championship round twice, first in 2014 and again in 2015.
