Tennis Defeats East Carolina In First Round of American Championship

Cougars prepared to face UCF, 11 a.m. CT, Thursday in quarterfinals
ORLANDO, Fla. – The University of Houston Tennis program opened action at the 2023 American Athletic Conference Tennis Championship with a 4-2 victory against East Carolina from the USTA National Center on Wednesday afternoon.
Houston (14-8) picked up four singles points to advance to the quarterfinals, while East Carolina (9-10) claimed the doubles point along with a singles point.
The Cougars will now face (2) UCF at 11 a.m. CT, Thursday. The winner of the match will advance to semifinals at 2 p.m. CT, Friday, against the winner of (3) South Florida/ (6) Memphis. The championship match will be held at 3 p.m. CT Saturday. The final can be seen on ESPN+.
DOUBLES
East Carolina quickly captured court one as Ines Bachir and Alisha Hussain defeated Sophie Schouten and Laura Slisane (6-2). Freshman Sonya Kovalenko and senior Azul Pedemonti grabbed the win on court two after defeating Martina Muzzolon and Isabella Rivera Ortiz in a tie-breaker (7-6 (7-4)).
The Pirates and Cougars battled on court three with East Carolina coming out on top after Kim Auerswald and Anne Lou Champion toppled Elena Trencheva and Blanca Cortijo Parreno (7-6 (9-7)).
SINGLES
The Pirates grabbed their second and final point of the afternoon after Muzzolon defeated Pedemonti (6-2, 6-2) on court three.
Houston quickly responded by grabbing the following four points on courts two, four, five and six. Schouten gave the Cougars their first point of the day in a three-set victory against Joan Madi (2-6, 6-2, 6-0).
A few moments later, freshman Gabriela Cortes evened the score after defeating Hussain (6-4, 6-3) on court four. Maria Dzemeshkevich picked up a third point for the Cougars after defeating Rivera Ortiz in a two-set victory (6-4, 6-3).
Kovalenko sealed the victory on court six in a three-set battle (3-6, 6-4, 6-3) against Lou Champion to send the Cougars to the quarterfinals.
