#21 Volleyball Hosts Largest Home Women’s Crowd in School History

Cougars set attendance record for second time in 2023 with 7,054 in attendance
HOUSTON – The #21 University of Houston Volleyball team broke its attendance record for the second time this season, also breaking Houston Athletics' record for largest crowd at a women's athletic event, as 7,054 fans entered Fertitta Center to watch the Cougars, who ultimately fell in four sets to #7 Texas on Saturday afternoon.
Despite tallying one more kill (59-58) than Texas (12-3, 7-0 Big 12), Houston (9-6, 2-4 Big 12) struggled with Texas' block as the Longhorns outblocked the Cougars, 14-6. It's only the fifth time this season Houston tallied fewer blocks than its opponent.
Graduate Kenna Sauer led the match and set a new program season-high with 23 kills. Overall, the outside hitter tallied a .356 hitting percentage with a 23-7-45 mark and clinched a double-double with 16 digs. It marked her seventh career match with 20-or-more kills and her sixth double-double of the season. Senior Kate Georgiades also paced both teams with 20 digs, her fifth 20-or-more performance of the year.
Junior Kellen Morin continued her successful season, posting a .643 efficiency with nine kills and no errors on 14 attempts. Graduate Abbie Jackson tallied 12 kills while graduate Morgan Janda paced the Cougars with 24 assists. Graduate Rachel Tullos notched four blocks along with three kills.
SET ONE
Houston took two of the first three points for an early lead, but the Longhorns answered with a 3-0 run to take the lead for good. The Cougars kept it close throughout, never trailing by more than five, but ultimately dropped the set, 25-21.
SET TWO
The two teams battled throughout the second frame. Staying tied after six points, Houston used a 4-0 run to take the lead, but Texas fought back to even the score at 13-13. The teams traded points to stay deadlocked at 17-17 before the Cougars rattled off an 8-0 run to clinch the set win, 25-17.
Sauer tallied six kills and five digs in the set as Jackson and Morin both posted four kills. Georgiades earned six digs while Janda notched eight assists.
SET THREE
The teams again traded blows to start the third, resulting in a 10-10 tie after 20 points. Texas used a 4-1 run to snag the advantage, but Houston clawed back with a 5-0 run to take an 18-16 lead. While the Longhorns would again tie the score at 18-18, the Cougars used a 4-0 run to near victory in the set up 22-18. Texas came charging back, tying the score at 23-23 and ultimately winning the frame, 25-23.
SET FOUR
In the final set, the teams stayed equal early, evenly splitting the first eight points. The Longhorns then posted a 6-0 run to take the lead, holding the Cougars at arm's length for the remainder of the match, clinching the set, 25-17, and the match, 3-1.

Houston caps a four-match homestand with a Noon, Sunday, first serve against #7 Texas. The match will be nationally televised on ESPN.

- Georgiades moved up to sixth on Houston's career digs list. Her 20 on Saturday brought her career total to 1,602, surpassing Olivia O'Dell's 1,587 from 2012-2015.
- Jackson moved into a tie with O'Dell for second on Houston's career sets played list with 478. Tullos furthered her record in the category with 512.
- Junior Katie Corelli's one block in the match gave her 100 in her career.
- The crowd of 7,054 was the 31st largest crowd in Division I volleyball this season and the largest crowd so far in the state of Texas and in the Big 12 Conference.
