Divers Sweep Podiums as Swim & Dive Completes Day One of Rice Fall Splash Invitational and Houston Diving Invitational

Cougars sweep podiums in 1-meter, 3-meter at CRWC Natatorium and earn four first place finishes in Swimming at Rice
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Swimming & Diving program captured six top spots and 19 podium finishes in the first day of the Houston Diving Invitational and Rice Fall Splash Invitational.Â

In the CRWC Natatorium, two divers earned NCAA Zone Cuts while the Cougars swept the top four in both the 1-meter and 3-meter competitions. At Rice, the Cougars rallied for 13 podium spots, including four first-place finishes.Â

RICE FALL SPLASH INVITATIONAL
Freshman Elizabeth Jimenez clinched her first collegiate first place finish with a 2:00.78 in the 200-yard backstroke while sophomore Liya Goupil used a 23.68 to tie with Denver's Eri Remington for first place in the 50-yard freestyle. Both fifth-year Audrey McKinnon and Alondra Ortiz secured the top spot in their events as well, swimming a 2:16.31 and a 2:05.66 in the 200-yard breaststroke and 200-yard IM, respectively.Â

Jimenez, freshman Evelyn Entrekin, sophomore Noor El Gendy and Goupil swiped second place (3:45.54) in the 400-yard medley relay, with senior Danielle Titus, junior Henrietta Fangli, junior Adelaide Meuter and junior Mary Catherine Jurica taking third (3:47.93) in the same event.Â

Titus took her second podium finish as a Cougar in the 200-yard back with a mark of 2:02.04 while sophomore Virag Peter earned her first second place tally of the season with a 2:19.14 in the 200-yard breaststroke.Â

Junior Abbie Alvarez swam a 55.50 to claim second in the 100-yard butterfly with Jurica also earning a second-place finish with a 51.90 in the 100-yard freestyle.Â

Jimenez continued to shine in other races, using a 26.30 to finish second in the 50-yard backstroke and Nora Hetyei closed Houston's individual podiums, swimming a 2:05.74 in the 200-yard IM for second.

Houston's squad of Goupil, Anna Ervin, Jurica and Fangli finished the podium tallies at Rice for the Cougars, swimming a 43.67 in the 100-yard freestyle relay.Â

HOUSTON DIVING INVITATIONAL
Fifth-year Chase Farris led the way in Houston's sweep of the podium in the 1-meter competition earning a 308.30 to place first in the event, followed by senior Emilia Waters in second (284.70) and junior Josie Graves in third (277.50), with Graves also earning a 1-meter NCAA Zone Cut. Freshman Michelle McLeod, who already earned a 1-meter and 3-meter Zone Cut last meet at the Dust Off Your Boots Invitational, helped the Cougars' claim all of the top four spots with her fourth-place finish.Â

The Cougars again swept the top four spots in the 3-meter competition. Both already earning their Zone Cuts in the event, senior Hedda Grelz placed first with a 323.25 while Farris finished in second with a 310.20. Waters clinched third and an NCAA Zone Cut with a 282.15 and McLeod again rounded out the top four with a 280.75.Â

Houston continues competition in both the Rice Fall Splash Invitational and the Houston Diving Invitational. At Rice, Swim competition kicks off at 9:30 a.m. and restarts at 1:30 p.m. at the Rice Competition Pool while Dive begins the day with platform dives at 10 a.m. and resumes with the team competition at 12:30 p.m. at the CRWC Natatorium.Â
