Cougars earn two first-place finishes against Miami, FGCU
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Freshman Alondra Ortiz and fifth year Katie Deininger led the University of Houston Swimming & Diving program to two first-place finishes on Friday afternoon in a tri-meet against Miami and FGCU in Coral Gables, Fla., from the Whitten Center Pool on the campus of Miami.
Houston commenced the day with the 200-yard medley relay compromised of sophomores Adelaide Meuter, Henrietta Fangli, Abbie Alvarez and Emma Wright, placing second with a time of 1:45.86.
Ortiz earned two podium finishes for the Cougars including first place in the 200-yard butterfly (2:02.18) and third in the 100-yard butterfly (57.16).
Alvarez earned three individual podiums, taking second in both the 100-yard butterfly (56.39), 200-yard IM (2:07.55), in addition to clinching third in the 200-yard butterfly (2:04.27).
Freshman Eden Humphrey grabbed second place in both the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:13) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:01.07).
Sophomore Mary Catherine Jurica clinched second place in the 200-yard freestyle after touching the wall in 1:54.07.
The Cougars grabbed the second and third spots in the 100-yard breaststroke with sophomore Henrietta Fangli striking second (1:04.56) and senior Audrey McKinnon coming in third (1:04.64).
McKinnon earned a second podium finish in the 200-yard breaststroke taking second (2:18.84), while senior Sophie Anderson (2:19.96) came in third.
Wright snagged an additional third-place finish for the Cougars in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.19.
Houston found success on the 1-meter diving board with Deininger placing first (287.40), junior Hedda Grelz securing second (273.83) and junior Emilia Waters placing third (272.93). In the 3-meter, Waters placed second at 302.35 and senior Chase Farris scored a 283.80 for third place.
The Cougars ended the meet with a second-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle with a time of 3:29.72 led by Jurica, Elizabeth Richardson, Alyssa Bloser and Wright.

Houston will close out its home schedule hosting Rice at 10 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 28 at the CRWC Natatorium for Senior Day. The Cougars will honor their six seniors with a ceremony beginning at 9:45 a.m. Fans can attend the meet free of charge with no student claim necessary.
