Senior strikes out seven in complete-game shutout
GREENVILLE, N.C. – Senior Kenna Wilkey struck out seven in her team-leading fifth complete game leading the Houston softball team to a 5-0 win at East Carolina on Friday evening at Max R. Joyner Family Stadium.
The Pirates (19-19, 2-5 American) managed three hits off Wilkey over seven innings, the second-fewest hits allowed by Wilkey this season in a complete game.
Catcher Kati Ray Brown clubbed her ninth home run of the year and drove in her 20th and 21st RBIs of the season in the second inning, giving Houston a 2-0 lead.
Four-straight hits in the third inning put Houston (21-16-1, 5-1-1 American) up 5-0. Singles by left fielder Amanda Carden and shortstop Rock Benavides put a runner in scoring position for second baseman Becca Schulte to drive in on a double over the third base bag into the left field corner. A base hit up the middle by center fielder Aspen Howie cleared the bases.
The shutout by Wilkey marked her second individual shutout of the season – both have come on the road.
Eight different Cougars recorded base hits, including the first five batters in the lineup. Both Howie and Brown tallied multi-RBI games.
The Cougars are 6-0 when Brown has homered.
