Houston scores six unanswered runs, Todd spins six-consecutive scoreless innings

GREENVILLE, N.C. – The Houston softball team trailed by three runs after the first inning but scored six unanswered runs on its way to a 6-3 win at East Carolina on Saturday to take the second game and the series at Max R. Joyner Family Stadium.

The Cougars (22-16-1, 6-1-1 American) tied a school record with three double plays in the game and have won five-straight games for the first time since 2020. Houston is now unbeaten in the last seven games dating to March 26.

Houston has homered in five consecutive games thanks in part to a three-run opposite field home run by designated player Bethany Busch in the fifth inning. The homer gave the Cougars a 5-3 lead after trailing since the first inning and was Busch's first home run since March 4 against No. 7 Washington.

East Carolina (19-20, 2-6 American) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. A single, back-to-back doubles and a sacrifice bunt scored the three runs for the Pirates.

Houston clawed back with a crooked number of its own in the third inning. A two-out single by center fielder Aspen Howie plated right fielder Paige Hulsey. A bases loaded base hit by Bethany Busch scored the second run of the inning.

The Cougars made it 5-3 on Busch's home run and then 6-3 on a line drive to left that was misplayed off the bat of pinch hitter LA Matthews.

After giving up three runs in the first inning, graduate Hannah Todd (8-5) twirled six scoreless innings to earn her eighth win of the season.
