Houston ties Tulsa for first tie since 2010, Myers tallies career-high three hits
HOUSTON – Due to travel, and for the first time since May 2, 2010, the Houston softball team tied its game at Tulsa 2-2 in nine innings on Sunday.
The Cougars (17-16-1, 1-1-1 American) and the Hurricane (12-18-1, 1-1-1 American) were tied through 3 1/2 innings before Tulsa took the lead.
A seventh inning sacrifice fly by Houston tied the game at 1-1 before the Cougars took their first lead in the eighth inning off the hot bat of third baseman Baylea Myers.
However, Tulsa tied the game in the bottom half of the eighth via a two-out solo home run.
Houston's starter Kenna Wilkey twirled a career-high 154 pitches in 8.0 innings before starting the ninth inning, tying a career-high for innings pitched but earned a no-decision in the tie.
Third baseman Baylea Myers led the team offensively in the nine-hole spot with a career-high three-hit day. First baseman Britaney Shaw also tallied a multi-hit performance.
Scoreless through the first three innings, Tulsa pushed the first run of the game across in the bottom of the fourth inning with a two-out bloop double that evaded left fielder Bethany Busch's diving catch attempt.
The Cougars had chances to tie the game in the fifth and sixth innings but couldn't push across the tying run in either inning.
A lead-off double down the left field line by third baseman Baylea Myers scored on a sacrifice fly by redshirt freshman LA Matthews to tie game at 1-1 in the seventh inning.
The Cougars took the lead in the eighth inning on a single over the third base bag by Myers, her third hit of the day.
Tulsa tied the score in the bottom of the eighth on a two-out home run to left center.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, a lead-off double by Tulsa was stranded at second base as the 3:15 p.m. drop dead time limit, agreed upon at the plate meeting, dinged so that Houston could meet its travel plans.
