Houston hits five home runs, pair homer twice as Cougars even series
Houston posted season-highs in hits (16), RBIs (13) and home runs (5), while getting two home run-days from two different batters in the win. The two teams combined for 31 hits and 24 runs in the marathon contest.
Catcher Kati Ray Brown and second baseman Becca Schulte each went yard twice in the game. Brown and first baseman Britaney Shaw hit back-to-back blasts in the fourth inning.
Schulte ended the day going 4-5 with five RBI and two home runs, while five total Cougars posted multiple hits in the game and four Cougars drove in multiple runs.
Tulsa started the scoring in the first inning with an RBI single before Brown hit her first home run of the game in the top of the second inning.
Three runs by Tulsa in the bottom of the second gave the Hurricane the lead for the final time in the game as Houston posted seven runs in the third inning.
The Cougars sent 13 to the plate in the third inning and posted a season-high seven hits in an inning in the frame.
UH pushed two runs across in the fourth inning via the back-to-back home runs followed by two runs in the fifth inning.
Tulsa tried to come back, scoring three in the sixth inning, but starting pitcher Hannah Todd came back into the game to close the door and finished the seventh with a perfect inning.
The back-to-back jacks by Shaw and Brown marked the first time since 2021 the Cougars had hit back-to-back home runs in a game. Brown and Schulte's two-home run-days marked the first time since 2021 that two Cougars had hit a pair of home runs in the same game.
UP NEXT
The Cougars and Hurricane will duke it out on Sunday at 12 p.m. CT to decide the series before returning home for a midweek doubleheader against Texas A&M on Wednesday, March 30.
