Wilkey strikes out 5, Houston tallies 12 hits in win
San Diego (14-19) scored a pair of runs on two bases loaded walks before Wilkey (6-5) entered and halted the threat. The senior then mowed down the Toreros with five strikeouts, allowed just two hits and gave up two walks over her 6.1 scoreless innings.
Offensively, Houston (14-14) tallied 12 hits, including four doubles off four different bats and scored multiple runs in four innings.
A lead-off base hit by right fielder Amanda Carden scored the next batter on a double by left fielder Bethany Busch. A pair of walks gave designated player LA Matthews opportunity to drive in the second run of the inning on a sacrifice fly. A base hit through the left side by first baseman Britaney Shaw scored Houston's third run of the inning and gave Houston a 3-2 lead.
The Cougars scored two runs in the fourth inning on three hits, two runs in the fifth on two hits and two runs in the sixth on two more hits.
The 12 hits are the most by Houston since slapping 14 against New Mexico State in Las Vegas and the nine runs are the most runs scores since the Cougars scored 11 against the Aggies as well.
