Houston assistant coach returns to former school
HOUSTON − University of Houston volleyball assistant coach Brian Gerwig has been named the head coach at Arkansas State on Tuesday following three successful seasons as a Cougar assistant coach.Â
"I am beyond excited for Brian to be named the head volleyball coach at Arkansas State University," Houston head coach David Rehr said. "I believe he was ready three years ago and I know he is ready now. I'm excited to see where he takes the program in the years to come."Â
Gerwig returns to Jonesboro, Ark. where he was an assistant under Rehr from 2017-18. During his time as an assistant at Houston, Gerwig helped the Cougars to 25 wins in 2021, the most since 1994, helped outside hitter Abbie Jackson to VolleyballMag.com All-American honors in the Spring 2021 season and The American all-conference honors in both the Spring 2021 and regular 2021 seasons.
During his time at Houston, he helped produce one of the most high-powered offenses in The American with the Cougars leading the league in kills (13.66) and assists per set (12.63) in 2020-21. In 2020, partly due to Gerwig's offensive schemes, Houston landed a program-record three first-team all-league selections, along with freshman Annie Cooke earning Freshman and Setter of the Year laurels.
In his first season, Gerwig was key in developing one of the nation's top middle blocking groups, as the Cougars tallied 308.0 blocks, a mark that ranked third in the conference and 23rd nationally.
Gerwig previously coached two seasons at Arkansas State (2017-18), helping the Red Wolves to the Sun Belt Conference Tournament semifinals or better in both seasons, including a runner-up finish in 2017. He was part of two NIVC appearances, including a second-round finish in 2017.
Before his stint in Jonesboro, Gerwig coached four seasons as an assistant at George Washington in Washington, D.C., where he was part of a program that racked up 70 total wins.
Before his tenure at George Washington, Gerwig served as a volunteer assistant at Western Kentucky – his alma mater – in 2012, which turned out to be the Lady Toppers' most successful season in school history, coming in at 33-4. His focus was primarily defense and middle blockers, and he helped coach a pair of All-Americans and the Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Year.
