Flores ties career high with 7 strikeouts, combines with Blincoe for shutout
HOUSTON – Senior Saleen Flores and freshman Hannah Blincoe combined for 7.0 scoreless innings in the Houston softball team's 5-0 shutout of Northwestern State on Sunday.
Flores tied a career high with seven strikeouts over 5.0 innings of scoreless work. Flores gave up just three baserunners on a pair of hits and a walk and allowed just one baserunner to get into scoring position.
Blincoe tossed her longest outing as a Cougar, twirling 2.0 innings of scoreless relief work. The freshman struck out two batters in her outing, a career high.
Houston (13-12) started the scoring in the second inning with a sacrifice fly off the bat of designated player Paige Lott.
Right fielder Paige Hulsey scored on a wild pitch in the third inning before center fielder Aspen Howie's sacrifice fly plated second baseman Becca Schulte.
Schulte hit her third home run of the weekend in the fifth inning, a towering fly ball that evaded the Demons' center fielders' glove by inches. The home run pushed Houston's lead to 5-0.
In the series, Houston's pitching staff posted a 1.67 ERA with 26 strikeouts in 21.0 total innings.
Offensively, the Cougars hit .314 against Northwestern State (12-11) with four home runs, and six doubles. Schulte led the charge offensively in the series, hitting .714 across the three games with three home runs and six RBI.

The Cougars go back on the road to compete in the Hall of Fame Classic in Oklahoma City, Okla. March 18-19 against three Power 5 opponents, including a third matchup this year with #1 Oklahoma.
