
Alexander Frances Continues to Lead Men’s Golf

Senior fires 66 in Monday’s Second Round at Cabo Collegiate Invitational to surge into tie for fourth
CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico – University of Houston senior Alexander Frances fired a 5-under 66 in Monday's play to lead the Cougars into surge into a tie for fourth following the Second Round of the Cabo Collegiate Invitational on Monday afternoon.
Frances began his day with a birdie off No. 15 and continues his stellar play through the day on the 6,807-yard, par-71 layout at Cove Club Golf Course.
Following four straight pars, the Stege, Denmark, native drained three straight birdies on Nos. 2-4 before enduring his lone bogey of the day on the par-4 fifth hole. Frances recovered with two birdies in a 3-hole stretch on Nos. 9-11 and ended his day with three straight pars.
As a team, the Cougars bettered Sunday's score by 14 strokes and tied with #21 Vanderbilt and California for the low team round of the day at 10-under 274. The Cougars moved into a tie for 10th with No. 8 Stanford at 563 through 36 holes.
Frances was one of four Cougars who shot par or better Monday. Senior Braxton Watkins fired a 69 and was tied for 34th at 141. The Winthrop, Ark., native struggled early and was 2-over through his first five holes.
Fortunately, Watkins recovered and returned to even par with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 2-3. Fighting through his final bogey of the day at No. 5, Watkins alternated birdies and pars at No. 7 through No. 11 and capped his day with three straight pars.
Junior Austyn Reily bettered his First-Round score by 14 strokes with a 68 in Monday's action. Battling through a bogey at No. 18 on his first hole of the day, Reily drained consecutive birdies on Nos. 4-5 and overcame his last bogey on No. 8 with three birdies over his final seven holes to tie for 69th at 150.
Junior Marcus Wochner enjoyed an even-par 71 and was tied for 55th at 146, while senior Andrew Gibson was tied for 63rd at 148.
No. 41 Florida State and No. 3 Oklahoma State were tied for the team lead at 550. No. 7 Arkansas (553), No. 16 Mississippi (553), No. 21 Vanderbilt (555), California (556), No. 10 Tennessee (557), No. 6 Texas Tech (560) and No. 28 Arizona (562) completed the Top-Nine leaders.
Arizona's Chase Sienkiewicz stood atop the individual leaderboard at 10-under 132 to stand two strokes in front of Mateo Fernandez De Oliveira (Arkansas) and Gordon Sargent (Vanderbilt). Frances joined Cole Sherwood (Vanderbilt), Michael Thorbjornsen (Stanford), Frederik Kjetterup (Florida State), Eugenio Lopez-Chacarra (Oklahoma State), Thomas Ponder (Alabama) and Brian Stark (Oklahoma State) at 135.
The tournament and wraps up with the Final Round beginning at 9 a.m. (CST), Tuesday.
