
Theut Powers Volleyball Past No. 23 UCF

HOUSTON – The University of Houston volleyball team earned its first ranked win since 2003 with a four-set victory over No. 23 UCF on Friday night in front of a record crowd at the Fertitta Center.
Houston (14-2, 5-0 The American) now holds sole possession of first place in the American Athletic Conference, going undefeated through five games in league play for the third time in four seasons under Head Coach David Rehr. The team remains an unbeaten 6-0 at home.
The crowd of 1,173 sets a new program record at the Fertitta Center, passing the previous best of 1,154 against UConn on Nov. 10, 2019.
Graduate Isabel Theut posted 22 kills in the match, her fourth time this season posting 20-or-more kills, along with a .349 hitting percentage and three block assists. Junior Kate Georgiades led the match with 28 digs, while senior Morgan Janda tied for the match-high with 34 assists and senior Rachel Tullos also tied for the match lead with seven total blocks (two solo, five assists).
Overall, Houston held the Knights to a .102 hitting percentage, the first time this season UCF has hit under .200, with their previous season-low being .268 against Kansas State and Memphis.
SET 1
Despite falling behind early, trailing by as many as five points at 5-10, the Cougars used a 10-3 run to take a 15-13 lead, capped by a kill from Theut off an assist from Janda. With the set remaining close through the end, graduate Kortlyn Henderson clinched the first for the Cougars with a kill, 25-23.
Through the first set, Theut was hitting .545 with seven kills and only one error, while Janda and Annie Cooke tallied nine and five assists, respectively.
SET 2
While the first set featured only one lead change, the second set was a back-and-forth affair with neither team earning more than a three-point lead. Ultimately, after 12 ties and six lead changes, UCF took the second frame, 25-22.
SET 3
Houston quickly rebounded in the third set and led 7-4 early in the frame. While UCF would even the score at 16-16, a 4-0 run by the Cougars featuring kills by Henderson and Tullos put Houston back in front, 20-16. With the score again tied at 24-24, graduate Kennedy Warren notched a kill off an assist from Cooke to give the Cougars the advantage and a UCF attack error sealed the set for Houston, 26-24.
SET 4
Leading by a set, Houston capitalized on the opportunity to shut the door on the ranked opponent. With a 21-15 lead, the Cougars withstood a comeback attempt from the Knights to win the set, 25-22, and the match, 3-1.
UP NEXT
The Cougars remain at home as South Florida visits the Fertitta Center on Sunday. The match is scheduled for a 1 p.m. first serve. Houston is tied with the Bulls, 8-8, all-time but holds a three-game win streak in the series.
