HOUSTON – Having already broken the attendance record once this weekend, hosting 1,173 fans for a thrilling win over No. 23 UCF, the University of Houston volleyball team entered Sunday looking for another conference win in front of dedicated home fans. The Cougars got the win, 3-1, over the South Florida Bulls in front of an even bigger crowd of 1,455 fans, shattering the attendance record the team set than 48 hours prior.
Houston (15-2, 6-0 The American) moves to 7-0 at home, maintaining its unblemished record at the Fertitta Center. The Cougars improve to 9-8 all-time against South Florida (6-10, 0-4 The American) and extends its win streak in the series to four.
Senior Abbie Jackson led the charge against the Bulls, gathering 15 kills and a .402 hitting percentage in the four-set win. Senior Morgan Janda tallied a match-high 25 assists while junior Kate Georgiades posted a match-best 16 digs.
Senior Rachel Tullos tied her season-best with 12 blocks, which ties for the second most in a four-set match in program history. It is a mark that she's tied twice before and was originally set by Erin Rice at Tulsa on Nov. 12, 2006.
The Cougars held South Florida to a .014 hitting percentage, the first time this season that Houston limited an opponent to an efficiency less than .050 and the first time they have done so since they held Prairie View A&M to .020 on Aug. 28, 2018.
The Cougars quickly took control of the first set, earning an 8-0 run that put Houston ahead 9-4, a lead that they'd never relinquish for the remainder of the set. Houston went on another 7-0 run later in the frame that resulted in the set win, 25-13.
Graduate Isabel Theut led the Cougars with three kills and a .750 efficiency, while Janda recorded eight assists. Overall, Houston hit .350 in the set, only recording three errors and 10 kills.
Houston continued hitting well into the second frame, earning another 25-13 set win behind a team .320 hitting percentage. The Cougars grabbed the first point and the lead never changed as Houston was effectively able to shut down any USF runs, going 11-14 on sideouts, a mark of 78 percent.
South Florida grabbed a set win in the third, recording a hitting percentage of .229 in the frame to cut into Houston's lead.
Houston shut the door on any comeback attempts from South Florida, using a 6-0 run and an 8-0 run to take a 21-5 lead. The Cougars finished the set off to earn the win in the frame, 25-12, and the match victory, 3-1.
