HARTFORD, Wis. – The University of Houston Men's Golf stood in 16th place with a score of 295 following the First Round of the Marquette Intercollegiate at Erin Hills on Sunday afternoon.
Making his collegiate debut, redshirt freshman Jacob Borow joined with junior Austyn Reily to lead the Cougars with a 73 on the 7,344-yard, par-72 layout at Erin Hills Golf Course. Both were tied for 38th.
After starting his collegiate career with a bogey on No. 10, Borow rallied to drain three birdies during his next nine holes to move to -2. Reily began his fall season with a pair of birdies on his first 12 holes.
Senior Alexander Frances was tied for 49th at 74, while junior Marcus Wochner – making his Houston debut after transferring from Wichita State – was tied for 65th at 75. Senior Andrew Gibson was tied for 73rd at 76.
Purdue held the first-day team lead at 275 to stand three strokes in front of South Florida. Texas A&M stood in third at 282, while Kansas was in fourth at 283. Notre Dame (285), Northern Illinois (286), Iowa (286), Liberty (287), Northwestern (288) and Marquette (289) rounded out the Top 10 leaders.
East Tennessee State's Mats Ege fired a 7-under 65 to hold the First-Round individual lead. Texas A&M's Walker Lee stood in second at 66, while Cole Bradley (Purdue), Taichi Kho (Notre Dame), Herman Sekne (Purdue), Albin Bergstrom (South Florida) and Ronan Kleu (Iowa) were tied for third at 67.
Senior Braxton Watkins, redshirt freshman Drew Murdock and freshman Julio Rios-Brache competed as individuals at the Washington County Individual at Washington County Golf Course.
Watkins was tied for 20th with a 73 to lead that group. Murdock and Rios-Brache were tied for 32nd at 78.

PAIRINGS
For Monday's Second Round, Houston will compete in groups with student-athletes from Northwestern and UC Davis.
Gibson begins the day at 10:40 a.m., of No. 1 with Wochner (10:50 a.m.), Frances (11 a.m.), Reily (11:10 a.m.) and Borow (11:20 a.m.) following.

UP NEXT
Following the Erin Hills Intercollegiate, the Cougars compete at the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate at Squire Creek Country Club in Choudrant, La., on Sept. 12-14.
From there, Houston will tee off at the Blessings Collegiate Invitational on Oct. 4-6 at Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark. The Cougars will join with their UH female counterparts at that event, which will air on GOLF Channel each day.
