Senior fires 67 in First Round and was tied for 13th when Second-Round play suspended due to darkness
HOUSTON – University of Houston Men's Golf senior Christian Gamboa stood in 13th midway at -2 through the Second Round of the Bayou City Collegiate Classic before play was suspended due to darkness at Westwood Country Club.
The tournament was halted for about nearly two-and-a-half hours midway through the Second Round due to severe weather. Schools will complete their Second Rounds beginning at 8 a.m., Tuesday, and then move into the Final Round.
Starting his day off No. 14 on the 7,184-yard, par-72 course, Gamboa ran into trouble with a bogey at No. 16 but returned to even par with a birdie on the next hole.
After a par at No. 18, the Merida, Mexico, native made another birdie on the par-5 first hole and overcame his last bogey of the round at No. 2 to make his third birdie in a six-hole stretch on the par-4 fourth hole.
Following another par at No. 5, Gamboa drained birdies on three of his next four holes and closed the round with his seventh and final birdie at No. 13.
Sophomore Jayk Altic stood in a tie for 24th after posting a 69 in the morning round. Starting off No. 13, Altic made birdie on his first hole of the season and moved to 3-under with back-to-back birdies at No. 18 and No. 1.
The Houston native rebounded from two bogeys in a three-hole stretch at Nos. 2-4 to sink additional birdies at No. 6 and No. 12.
Senior Enrique Karg was tied for 76th at +9 while sophomore Dominic Green was tied for 84th at +17.
Texas' Sterling Hurd held the individual lead at -9 to stand two strokes ahead of Rob Politz (Valparaiso) and Connor Henry (Middle Tennessee). Davis Byrd (Rice) was in fourth at -6 while UTRGV's Esteban Gonzalez was in fifth at -5 with play was halted.
UT Arlington held the team lead at -12 to stand one stroke ahead of Rice. UTRGV (-8), Middle Tennessee (-3), Abilene Christian (-1) and Sam Houston (-1) completed the Top-Six leaders.
The Bayou City Collegiate Classic was a recent addition to the Cougars' fall schedule.
