Gear Announced as Conference Offensive Player of the Week

HOUSTON – Houston Soccer's Madison Gear was named Offensive Player of the Week, The American Athletic Conference announced on Monday.

The sophomore midfielder has recorded 229 total minutes so far in the 2021 season including a high of 71 minutes against Stephen F. Austin last Thursday. She put the equalizer in the net against SFA to tie the match 4-4 late in the 88^th minute.

"This year Madison has really stepped up her game as a leader on and off the field," said Head Coach Diego Bocanegra. "With that, I see her playing with more confidence."

Gear had another outstanding performance on Sunday against Houston Baptist where she put the game-winning goal on the scoreboard. She also recorded two shots during her 50 minutes.

Freshman Anna Reysa also earned weekly honors as an honorable mention on The American Honor Roll. Reysa scored her first collegiate-career goal against McNeese in the 79^th minute to tie the match which later resulted in an overtime win for the Cougars. She also scored again on Sunday against Houston Baptist.

"Anna has worked hard in training and has taken full advantage of the opportunities she's been given," said Bocanegra. "She is one of our more effective players as she has made an impact in a short amount of time on the field."

UP NEXT
Houston will make another home appearance at the Carl Lewis International Complex at 7 p.m. Thursday to face Lamar for Hispanic Night.
