The Cougars (16-23, 4-12 AAC) struck three times in the seventh including a two-run single from Ryan Hernandez to trim Tulane's advantage to two before stranding a pair. Houston left the bases loaded an inning earlier after Will Pendergrass worked a bases-loaded walk.
Tyler Bielamowicz clubbed a solo home run in the ninth inning. Ryan Hernandez and Dylan Post followed with singles before Tulane reliever Keegan Gillies buckled down with a pair of strikeouts.
Houston starter Carter Henry (1-3) lasted just 2.2 innings. The right-hander allowed five runs on seven hits and struck out four while walking two. After plating three in the second, seven-hole hitter Ethan Groff lifted a two-out, two-run home run into left for a 5-0 advantage.
The Cougars, which had snapped Tulane's 12-game win streak in the doubleheader opener, dropped the series with the loss. The Green Wave improved to 24-14 overall and 13-2 in league play. Hernandez (2-for-4) led Houston with a pair of RBIs while Pendergrass (2-for-4) tallied two hits.
Cougar reliever Matt Lazzaro tossed 2.1 innings, allowing a pair of hits and a run while striking out four. Colby Casey recorded his first collegiate strikeout and worked around a pair of walks during 1.0 scoreless inning.
Tulane starter Tyler Hoffman (4-1) was effective in his eighth start. The right-hander held Houston to a pair of hits and one run alongside three walks while striking out eight in 5.1 innings. Houston broke through against Zach Devito who permitted three runs on four hits in 1.1 innings.
Houston returns to action Friday when it closes home regular season play with a four-game set against Cincinnati. The series opener is set for 2 p.m. from Schroeder Park. The second contest will begin 45 minutes following the conclusion of the opener.
