Cougars Stumped in Opener

HOUSTON – Cincinnati collected a pair of home runs and Griffin Merritt tallied four RBIs as the Bearcats downed Houston, 7-2 in the four-game series opener Friday afternoon from Don Sanders Field at Darryl & Lori Schroeder Park.
The teams return to action at 5:40 p.m. for the doubleheader finale. Houston right-hander Jaycob Deese 2-4, 4.83 ERA) will face Cincinnati righty Zach Segal (4-3, 4.66 ERA). The contest can be seen on ESPN+ and heard on Stretch Live.
Cincinnati (22-20, 11-10 AAC) jumped out to a 4-0 advantage through three innings. Griffin Merritt (2-for-4) delivered a two-out, two-RBI double in the second and added a two-run home run in the sixth. Joey Bellini (2-for-5) clubbed a two-run home run and added an RBI-single.
Houston starter Robert Gasser (5-5) allowed a season-high six runs on eight hits. The southpaw fanned five and walked a pair. After allowing one or no extra-base hits in seven starts, the El Dorado Hills, California, native permitted three including two homers.
The Cougars (16-24, 4-13 AAC) could not break through against Cincinnati starter Garrett Schoenle (5-2). The southpaw worked around 10 hits, allowing two runs – both in the inning – while walking a pair and striking out three.
Adam Becker provided an RBI-single in the ninth inning, bringing home Hayden Winters who doubled off the wall for his first hit as a Cougar. Two batters later, Brandon Uhse added an RBI-single through the left side to score Ian McMillan (single).
Houston's could not break through in the eighth, stranding the bases loaded. Pinch hitters Leyton Pinckney (single) and Samuel Tormos (double) reached before Tyler Bielamowicz (2-for-3) worked a seven-pitch walk. For Tormos, the double was his first collegiate hit.
