Fast Start Not Enough Against Shockers

Cougars score five runs in first two innings
WICHITA, Kan. – The University of Houston Softball team dropped game one of its four-game series with Wichita State by a score of 13-5 on Friday.
Houston (10-23, 1-8 AAC) jumped out to the first lead of the game, scoring a run in the first inning. After Wichita State (25-5, 8-1 AAC) tied the game, the Cougars plated four more runs in the second to take a 5-1 lead. Junior Bethany Busch got the rally started with a leadoff triple, and senior Aspen Howie later collected a two-RBI triple of her own to cash in a pair.
1st | After redshirt senior Stewart-Vaughn led the game off with a walk, she then stole second to put a runner in scoring position for Houston. Once she reached third, redshirt senior Sarah Queen drove her in with a sacrifice fly and RBI to put the Cougars in front first. The Shockers responded though with a run in the bottom of the inning to tie the score.
2nd | Houston found itself with another opportunity to score, courtesy of a leadoff triple from Busch. Following a single from senior Tierrah Williams that scored Busch, a walk from junior Kati Ray Brown put of a pair of runners on for Howie, who roped a triple of her own down the line to give Houston a 4-1 lead. Howie later scored, thanks to Stewart-Vaughn, giving Cougars a four-run advantage. In the bottom of the inning, the Shockers found another rebuttal, as a grand slam tied the score at five.
6th | Behind another grand slam and another run, the Shockers plated five in the inning to seal the victory.
