Shockers Surge Past Houston

WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State scored six runs in the fifth inning to unlock a scoreless tie en route to a 10-2 victory against Houston in the first of two contests Friday afternoon from Eck Stadium. The doubleheader finale begins at 6 p.m.
Houston will send southpaw Robert Gasser (4-2, 1.65 ERA) to the mound against Wichita State right-hander Liam Eddy (2-4, 5.83 ERA) in the second game of the split doubleheader. The contest can be seen on ESPN+ and heard on Stretch Live.
The Shockers (16-9, 4-1 AAC) sent 11 to the plate in the sixth, tagging Houston starter Jaycob Deese for six hits highlighted by five consecutive hits including a two-run single from Garrett Kocis. Hunter Gibson added an RBI-single and Paxton Wallace struck an RBI-double.
Deese (2-3) permitted a season-high nine hits and six runs alongside a pair of walks and one strikeout in 4.1 innings. Entering the contest, the Houston native had held opponents to a .238 (5-for-21) average with runners aboard in two previous starts.
Houston (13-15, 1-4 AAC) pushed two across in the sixth as Ryan Hernandez and Tyler Bielamowicz contributed consecutive RBI-singles after pinch-hitter Dylan Post singled and Brandon Uhse walked.
Wichita State answered with four runs over the next three innings including a two-run home run from Seth Stroh in the seventh. The Shockers batted .364 (8-for-22) with runners aboard and received a hit from eight-of-nine starters.
Uhse extended his on-base streak to 10 games and hit streak to seven with a fourth-inning single. Brad Burckel notched his eighth multi-hit game of the season and has 17 hits in his last 17 games behind a 2-for-3 performance.
