WICHITA, Kan. – Houston committed four errors and could not solve Shocker pitching, falling 7-1 to Wichita State on Friday night from a wind-filled Eck Stadium.
The Cougars (13-16, 1-5 AAC) opened the scoring without a hit in the first, taking advantage of a Brad Burckel walk and pair of wild pitches to go ahead 1-0. Houston mustered just three hits, all singles, coming from Adam Becker in the second inning and Steven Rivas in the third and ninth.
Houston starter Robert Gasser (4-3) allowed a career-high 10 hits alongside six runs (four earned) in 5.2 innings. The southpaw, who tossed five-plus innings for an eighth consecutive start to begin the season, fanned six and permitted four walks.
Gasser kept Houston in it, escaping trouble in the fourth by stranding the bases loaded after Wichita State put its first three aboard. The junior induced an infield fly out and added a strikeout before a fly out to center kept Houston's deficit at two.
Wichita State (17-9, 5-1 AAC) chased Gasser in the sixth and put across two with new reliever Andy Belcik on the mound. Hunter Gibson drew a bases-loaded walk and Couper Cornblum delivered an RBI-but single, stretching the Shocker advantage to five.
The teams return to action Saturday, taking part in the first event at the new Riverfront Stadium, home to Wichita's Double-A Wind Surge. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. and can be heard on Stretch Live. Houston will send right-hander Carter Henry (0-1, 3.60 ERA) to the mound against righty Jace Kaminska (2-0, 1.10 ERA).
