WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State's Hunter Gibson struck a grand slam and the Shockers cashed in with two outs in a 10-1 victory against Houston in the grand opening of Riverfront Stadium on Saturday afternoon in front of 7,509 spectators.
Paxton Wallace put Wichita State ahead in the first inning, clocking a two-run home run into right center. The Shockers added three two-out runs in the third including a pair of bases-loaded walks and bases-loaded Ross Cadena infield single for a 5-0 advantage.
The Shockers (18-9, 6-1 AAC) sent all nine batters to the plate in the fifth and broke things open on Gibson's grand slam to right field. Wichita State batted .455 (5-for-11) with two outs and hit .368 (7-for-19) with runners aboard.
Houston starter Carter Henry (0-2) allowed five runs on five hits while walking a pair and striking out as many in 2.2 innings. Shocker starter Jace Kaminska (3-0) tossed a complete game, allowing six hits and one run while walking a pair and striking out seven.
Six Cougars (13-17, 1-6 AAC) produced as many hits with the top-four in the order contributing one hit each. Nine-hole hitter Ian McMillan struck his third home run of the season, a solo homer to right field in the seventh.
The teams close the four-game set Sunday at 11 a.m. from Eck Stadium. Houston will send right-hander Ben Sears (1-1, 5.59 ERA) to the mound against lefty Spencer Hynes (2-1, 6.09 ERA). The contest can be heard on Stretch Live with Jeremy Branham on the call.
