Madison Gear and Caitlyn Matthews recognized for offense; Mikaela Gracia honored for goalkeeping
HOUSTON – The Houston soccer team received three honors on Monday as Madison Gear and Caitlyn Matthews were named to The American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Roll while Mikaela Gracia was named the Rookie of the Week, the conference announced today. Â
Both Gear and Matthews notched their first goals of the season in Friday's victory over Temple, plus Gear was credited with the assist on Matthews' goal. The two underclassmen had played over 600 combined minutes this season before each getting on the scoreboard for the Cougars in the span of about 25 minutes in the first half. Â
Meanwhile, Gracia had a stellar first conference start in net as she made four saves to preserve the team's fourth shutout of the season. The freshman now has five saves this season. Â
All three honorees are Texas natives.  Â
Houston had three prior conference awards before today with forward Jazmin Grant earning a pair in late March while goalkeeper Salma Ghazal earned recognition prior to that.Â
