Wichita State rallies past Houston, 3-2
HOUSTON – Wichita State capitalized on Houston miscues, pushing across a two-out ninth inning run to slip past the Cougars, 3-2 in the four-game series finale on Saturday afternoon from Don Sanders Field at Darryl & Lori Schroeder Park.
The result marked the third consecutive one-run loss for Houston (13-14, 1-3 AAC) in the series. Wichita State (15-9, 3-1 AAC) was led by Paxton Wallace, who finished 2-for-3 while reaching base three times. Reliever Ryan Stuempfig (5-0) earned the win behind two scoreless frames.
Houston right fielder Steven Rivas helped Houston keep the game locked at two-all, cutting down Wallace at the plate for the final out of the eighth. The double play erased a promising start after the Shockers put a runner at third with one out via a two-base error.
Will Pendergrass provided Houston a 2-0 advantage in the second, clubbing a two-run home run 364 feet over the left field wall. The long ball was his fifth of the season and third in his last eight games. Pendergrass (1-for-4) has at least one hit in nine of his last 10 games.
Houston starter Ben Sears tossed 7.0 innings, allowing three hits and two runs alongside four walks and five strikeouts. On the weekend, all four Cougar starters tossed at least seven innings. The unit posted a 2.05 ERA in 30.2 innings.
Houston reliever Derrick Cherry (1-2) drew the loss, allowing one run on two hits in 2.0 innings.
Houston continues its stretch of eight consecutive against Wichita State, opening a four-game set with the Shockers on Friday from Wichita, Kansas. Friday's doubleheader gets underway at 1 p.m. Both contests can be seen on ESPN+ and heard on Stretch Live.
