Breaking down the 2021 campaign statistically
While shortened, the 2021 season proved to be historically successful for the Houston soccer team. The team saw significant improvement and reached new heights individually, as position units, and as a team.Â
So, let's break down some of the numbers to see what the 2021 Cougars accomplished:Â
0.545Â Winning PercentageÂ
Above .500 for the first time since 2010, the 2021 Cougars realized a goal of theirs since Head Coach Diego Bocanegra arrived on campus in 2017. Propelled by a 3-1-1 start and capped with the program's first-ever victory over UCF, the program consistently competed both in non-conference and conference play. Â
8 Goals AllowedÂ
The Houston defense stepped up throughout the entire season as it recorded four shutouts and allowed only eight goals. Led in the middle by Emma Clarke and Cassidy Formanek, who topped the team in minutes played, the team held opponents to only 78 shots. On the wings the Cougars boasted team captain Amy Nguyen and All-Rookie selection Genaye Sanders. The team only allowed one multi-goal game this season.Â
16Â Goal DifferentialÂ
Putting together a stellar offense and a shutdown defense, Houston posted its best run differential since 2010, standing in stark contrast to its – 20 differential in 2019. Improvements in creating shots offensively and limiting opponent attacks was a key part of the team's success as Houston overwhelmed their opponents.
21Â AssistsÂ
The team was never shy about passing to create offense for their teammates as they racked up 21 assists on 24 total goals, or 87.5 percent. Whether coming from set plays or in the heat of action, the Cougars spread the offensive production across the team with 12 players scoring goals and 11 tallying assists. Â
24 Goals ScoredÂ
A dynamic offensive squad, the Cougars far outpaced the 2019 squad in nine fewer games. Led by a diverse attack up top with Jazmin Grant, Mia Brascia, and Zionah Browne leading the way and 12 total Cougars scoring goals across the season. The biggest offensive outburst came against Texas Southern with the Cougars winning 8-0. Â
30 Cougars In ActionÂ
A total of 30 Cougars made appearances throughout the season including 14 making seeing their first career action since arriving in Houston. That group includes 12 freshmen plus two transfers. Of that group, six recorded an offensive point to jumpstart their Cougars career.Â
32 SavesÂ
Two new Cougars stepped up in net after arriving on campus: Salma Ghazal and Mikaela Gracia. Ghazal, making eight appearances, saw most of the action and made 23 saves. Mainly late in the season, Gracia recorded eight saves in three starts. Senior Kate Godfrey also made one save in two appearances.Â
117Â ShotsÂ
Peppering their opponents consistently, the Houston offense tallied 117 shots in 11 games this season for an average of 10.63 per game. The squad was led by Jazmin Grant who totaled 19 shots, with 13 on frame, across the year.Â
971 Minutes PlayedÂ
Emma Clarke led the team with 971 minutes played, only missing 55 minutes of action across the entire season. Right behind her was fellow centerback Cassidy Formanek with 960 minutes. The midfielder who recorded the most minutes was Mia Brascia with 883 minutes while Zionah Browne was the top forward with 772 minutes played. Â
