HOUSTON – USF pushed across five runs in the 10th inning, spoiling a strong outing from Houston starter Jaycob Deese as the Bulls outlasted Houston, 8-4 in 10 innings on Saturday afternoon from Don Sanders Field at Darryl & Lori Schroeder Park.
USF (14-18, 4-6 AAC) capitalized on two Houston errors in the 10th, plating the go-ahead run on the first miscue. Matt Ruiz added a two-run single up the middle and Joaquin Monque contributed two more. All five runs came with two outs.
Houston, which ran away with a 9-2 win in the opener, fell to 14-19 overall and 2-8 in AAC play in the loss. Cougar reliever Derrick Cherry (1-3) was saddled with the loss, allowing five runs (none earned) on two hits and two walks while striking out four.
The Cougars brought the tying run to the plate in the 10th inning thanks to three hits in the frame including a fielder's choice RBI from Brandon Uhse. Brad Burckel and Tyler Bielamowicz singled in the frame before USF closer Logan Lyle locked up his third save.
Deese retired the final 10 batters he faced. The right-hander scattered seven hits and allowed three runs, all coming on a third-inning home run, alongside six strikeouts and one walk.
Houston scored three runs in the first two innings highlighted by three consecutive singles in the second inning including an RBI-base knock from Ian McMillan. McMillan totaled four hits on the day, including three in the first game of the day.
USF used one swing of the bat to even things up as leadoff batter Roberto Pena drilled a three-run home run into right field in the third inning. The Bulls produced five hits in the frame but left the bases loaded thanks in part to a diving grab from Deese in foul ground.
The teams close the four-game set with a 10 a.m. Sunday doubleheader. Houston right-hander Ben Sears (1-2, 6.41 ERA) will face righty Collin Sullivan (1-1, 5.11 ERA) in the seven-inning opener. The nine-inning finale will begin 45 minutes following its conclusion. Both contests can be seen on ESPN+ and heard on Stretch Live.
