Houston drops doubleheader opener
HOUSTON – Houston was unable to string things together offensively, producing just two hits in a 4-0 seven-inning loss to USF in the first of two contests Sunday afternoon from Don Sanders Field at Darryl & Lori Schroeder Park.
The result spoiled a strong start from Houston starter Ben Sears (1-3). The right-hander, who tossed a career-high 106 pitches, allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits while walking a pair and striking out five. Houston fell to 14-20 overall and 2-9 in AAC play in the loss.
The Bulls (15-18, 5-6 AAC) chased Sears in the seventh and added a two-out, two-run double off new reliever Andy Belcik. UCF starter Collin Sullivan (2-1) tossed a complete game, allowing two hits while striking out seven alongside one walk.
Sullivan retired eight Houston batters the first time through the order and did not allow his first hit until Brad Burckel clubbed a double into right center in the third. The hit was Burckel's fourth of the weekend.
The Bulls used three consecutive hits including an RBI-single from Jake Sullivan to start the scoring in the second. Two innings later, Daniel Cantu reached on a Houston error and came home two batters later on a Sullivan sacrifice fly.
Houston right fielder Steven Rivas added his sixth stolen bases in as many attempts this season. Tyler Bielamowicz contributed his fourth hit of the weekend, a double in the fourth.
The teams close the four-game series at 12:45 p.m. Houston will send right-hander Carter Henry (0-2, 5.16 ERA) to the mound against the Bulls. The contest can be seen on ESPN+ and heard on Stretch Live with Jeremy Branham on the call.
