HUMBLE, Texas – University of Houston senior Laurence Crea fired back-to-back 71s and stood in second following the first day of the Lone Star Invitational at Golf Club of Houston on Monday evening.
The Lone Star Invitational was a recent addition to the Cougars' schedule with five student-athletes competing as individuals on the 7,067-yard, par-72 course.
Freshman Hanseung Chang opened with a 69 in Monday's morning round and was tied for third at 144. Junior Braxton Watkins stood in fifth at 149, while senior Logan Young was tied for sixth at 150. Making his collegiate debut, redshirt freshman Niko Nebout joined Young in the tie for sixth at 150.
Texas State's Dalton Hankamer held the first-day lead at 4-under 140 after shooting 70 in each round. Chang joined Texas State's Clayton King in the tie for third.
FINAL-ROUND PAIRINGS
The tournament concludes with the Final Round teeing off with an 8 a.m., shotgun start Tuesday.
Chang will start off No. 13 to start the day with Crea (No. 14), Nebout (No. 16), Watkins (No. 17) and Young (No. 18) following.
UP NEXT
Following the Lone Star Invitational, Houston takes its first step in the postseason when it tees off at the American Athletic Conference Championships at Southern Hills Plantation in Brooksville, Fla., on April 23-25.
The winner of the league's annual postseason event receives the automatic bid to NCAA Regional play.
NCAA Regional play will be held May 17-19 at six sites across the nation, including Championship Course – New Mexico Golf Club (Albuquerque, N.M.), Golf Club of Tennessee (Nashville, Tenn.), Karsten Creek Golf Club (Stillwater, Okla.), Tumble Creek Golf Club (Cle Elum, Wash.), Sagamore Golf Club (Noblesville, Ind.) and Golden Eagle Golf & Country Club (Tallahassee, Fla.).
