Houston Set to Face ECU in Quarterfinals of American Championships

Cougars return to action at Dickies Arena
HOUSTON – The University of Houston women's basketball team returns to action on March 9 in the quarterfinals of the 2021 Air Force Reserve American Athletic Conference Championships. The Cougars are set to face sixth-seed ECU at 9 p.m. on ESPN+ inside Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.
FULL TOURNAMENT BRACKET
THE 4-1-1
After securing its second first-round bye in the last three seasons and highest regular-season finish since joining the league, UH will face sixth-seed ECU in the quarterfinals of the 2021 American Championships.
Two Cougars are averaging over 10 points per game as Miya Crump leads UH with 10.3 points per game, followed by Britney Onyeje with 10.2 points per game. Tatyana Hill leads UH on the glass, pulling down 6.0 rebounds per game. Dymond Gladney is the assists leader for the Cougars with 59 this season.
Houston is averaging 68.5 points per game on 39.4 percent shooting from the field and a 29.8 percent mark from beyond the 3-point line. The Cougars allow 61.9 points on defense while letting opponents shoot 38.3 percent and 24.0 percent from the field and beyond the arc, respectively.
Under Coach Hughey, Houston has been one of the most active defensive teams in the country over the past two seasons. The Cougars enter the game with 226 steals this season and 85 blocks, forcing 21.00 turnovers per game.
WHERE THEY RANK
The Cougars enter the game with seven consecutive victories dating back to Jan. 23. The Cougars closed out the month of February undefeated. Houston also went undefeated in December with a 4-0 record.
Houston is currently 52nd in the NET rankings which is the third highest in The American. The Cougar received two votes in the Week 15 USA Today Coaches Poll.
TALL ORDER COMPLETE
With its win against then-No. 13 USF the Cougars snapped a 29-game losing streak to ranked opponents. The Cougars defeated their first ranked opponent since 2010-11 and their first opponent ranked 13th or higher since 2003-04.
BALANCED ATTACK
Six Cougars are averaging 6.0 or more points per game this season. Four Cougars are among the top-30 scorers in The American this season.
Eight different Cougars have led the team in scoring for at least one game this season.
SCOUTING THE PIRATES
ECU is in its 2nd season under Head Coach Kim McNeill. The Pirates are 8-13 this season and 6-10 in conference play. The Pirates have won one of their last three games. Lashonda Monk leads ECU in points and assists with 13.7 points per game in addition to 57 assists this season. The Pirates average 60.2 points per game on 35.9 percent shooting from the field, including a 28.0 percent mark from the three-point line.

Tuesday's meeting is the 24th meeting between the two teams. Houston leads the series 15-9.

Houston has proven itself to be a threat from behind the three-point line, racking up at least six made three's in all but five games this season. Houston leads The American and is ranked 89th nationally with 145 made three-pointers this season. Onyeje is third in The American in made three-pointers this season with 42.

The Cougars have shown that they are not afraid to shoot three-pointers and on the flipside they are one of the best at defending the three-point shot. UH leads the league and 4th nationally in three-point FG defense, holding opponents to 22.9 percent from long-range.

Three times this season UH has forced 30 turnovers by an opponent, This season UH has earned 226 steals and is averaging 10.8 steals per game. Houston is 20th in the NCAA in steals per game and second in the league. When it comes to forcing turnovers, Houston is one of the best, second in the league with 20.95 forced turnovers per game the Cougars are 11th in the NCAA in the category.

With is largest roster in recent years, Houston has more than enough options off the bench. The Houston reserves have done their part, accounting for 454 points this season.
