HOUSTON – The University of Houston women's basketball team advanced to the semifinals of the 2021 Air Force Reserve American Athletic Conference Championships on Tuesday night behind a 73-63 win over sixth-seed ECU.
Houston will take on No. 2 UCF in the semifinals of The American Championships at 7:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
Four Cougars finished out the game in double-figures behind a 19-point effort from Laila Blair. Bria Patterson paced Houston on the boards with nine rebounds and 14 points, just shy of a double-double. Miya Crump had a stellar night with 14 points, six rebounds, four assists and a career-high six steals. Jazmaine Lewis recorded 12 points and six rebounds, as Britney Onyeje posted 10 points and seven rebounds.
The Cougars led from start to finish in a match-up between two of the best defensive teams in The American. Both teams shot 36 percent from the field, but second chance opportunities gave UH the edge as the Cougars outscored ECU 16-12 in the category. UH played aggressive for 40 minutes, earning trips to the free throw line and going 22-of-29 from the charity stripe. Of the Cougars 22 field goals, 14 of them were assisted.
Defensively, Crump paced the Cougars with a career-high six steals. Houston was strong as the rim with a season-high 10 blocked shots, outrebounding ECU 48-39.
This marks the first time since the 2016-17 season the UH has advanced to the semifinals of The American Championships.
