Mistakes Cost Cougars

Houston falls 8-2 to No. 19 Texas
In the loss, the Cougars dropped their first three-game series of the season. Houston starter Cameron Prayer (0-1) lasted just 0.2 innings, walking four of eight batters faced. The southpaw allowed four runs (one earned) alongside one hit.
The Longhorns (7-5) took advantage of the Cougar miscues, taking a 4-0 lead in the first. Trey Faltine drew a bases-loaded walk before Ivan Melendez reached on a two-run error. Cam Williams scored another on an infield single.
Houston (7-4) cut its deficit in half, plating single runs in the second and third innings before Texas stretched its lead back to five with a three-run fourth inning. The Longhorns needed just one hit in the frame and capitalized on three walks and a hit batter.
Cougar catcher Kyle Lovelace served as a bright spot, throwing out his fourth runner of the series and seventh of the season when the junior cut down Faltine in the seventh. Lovelace scored one of Houston's two runs as the Cougars finished the series with five in three games.
Texas starter Kolby Kubichek (2-1) fanned nine batters and allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits in 6.0 innings while lowering his ERA to 1.93.
Houston opens a four-game road trip Wednesday at UIW. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. The Cougars will play seven of their next eight games on the road with the lone home contest coming one week from Tuesday against Texas A&M.
