Five-Run Frames Propel Victory

Incarnate Word (3-2) battled back after Houston (8-4) scored five runs in the first inning, tying the game at five-all and again at six-all before the Cougars unloaded for five in the eighth inning highlighted by RBI-base hits from Steven Rivas (1-for-5), Ryan Hernandez (3-for-4), Will Pendergrass (2-for-5) and Ian McMillan (2-for-5).
The Cougars batted around in the first inning, pushing across five runs including a three-run, first-pitch home run from Hernandez, who registered a career-high four RBIs. The five runs chased UIW starter Brandon Troxler from the contest.
After the Cardinals tied things at five, Houston moved back in front in the sixth inning. Tyler Bielamowicz, who recorded four hits for the second time this season, sent a two-out single up the middle and raced around to score as Rivas lifted a sky-high shot into shallow right that could not be fielded.
The lead would be short-lived, however, as Jordan McFarland crushed his second home run of the game, a leadoff long ball in the seventh inning, knotting the game at 6-6.
Making his collegiate debut, UIW's Troxler allowed five hits and a walk while striking out one in 1.0 inning. McMillan added an RBI-single and Dylan Post sent a sacrifice fly into left field in the frame.
The Cardinals cut into Houston's lead in the third, scoring three runs highlighted by an RBI-triple from Zach Limas and two-out solo home run from McFarland. Luke Almendarez, who made his return to the lineup after a collision at home plate on Opening Day, prevented further damage, making a nice play at second base for the final out.
UIW tied the game in the fifth, thanks to two-out hitting. Ryan Flores struck a solo home run, chasing Houston starter Blake Schultz. Noah Brewer tripled and came home on a Lee Thomas single before right-hander Jaycob Deese entered, striking out Grant Smith.
Schultz allowed four runs, all earned, in 4.2 innings. The right-hander fanned six, walked a pair and permitted five hits, including two home runs. Deese (1-1) earned his first victory as a Cougar, allowing one run on one hit while striking out two in 2.1 innings.
