NORMAN, Okla. – Oklahoma used key two-out hits, including five two-out runs in the fifth inning to down Houston, 12-2 in seven innings and complete the three-game sweep on Sunday afternoon from L. Dale Mitchell Park.
The result marked the first time Houston (10-9) had been swept in a three-game series since April 15-17, 2016 at UConn. It was also the first time the Cougars have been swept in a three-game non-conference set since April 13-15, 2012 at Texas Tech.
The Cougars open a nine-game homestand Wednesday, taking on Prairie View A&M in doubleheader action beginning at 2 p.m. Game 2 will begin 45 minutes following the conclusion of Game 1. The contests can be seen on ESPN+ and heard on Stretch Live.
Houston starter Ben Sears (1-1) allowed nine runs on eight hits alongside two walks and a strikeout. After two scoreless frames, the Sooners tagged Sears for crooked numbers in the third and fifth including five two-out RBIs in the fifth.
After falling behind 4-0, Houston cut its deficit in half in the sixth. Brandon Uhse (1-for-3) brought in Brad Burckel (single) on a two-out single. Following a Will Pendergrass base knock (1-for-3), Steven Rivas (2-for-3) laced a double into the left field corner, scoring Uhse.
Sooner starter Brandon Carmichael (4-0) tossed three scoreless innings, working around three hits alongside four strikeouts. Four Oklahoma (12-7) players contributed multiple RBIs including Logan Kohler who reached base twice and drove in three.
Houston third baseman Luke Almendarez continued his strong weekend, going 1-for-2 while reaching base twice. The second-year freshman capped the weekend at 4-for-9. Burckel scored one of Houston's two runs and reached base three times in a 2-for-2 performance.
