HOUSTON – The University of Houston Women's basketball saw its seven-game winning streak snapped in a 65-57 loss to Cincinnati on Tuesday at the Fertitta Center.
Laila Blair led the Cougars with 19 points, matching her career high. Blair went 3-of-4 from the charity stripe and had a team-high four assists and four steals. Tatyana Hill had a near double-double, leading the Cougars on the glass with nine rebounds in addition to 11 points
Houston got out to a slow start, as Cincinnati made shots early to take a 10-7 lead at the first media timeout. Strong defensive kept the Cougars close as the held Cincinnati scoreless for over four minutes to trail 10-14 at the end of the first quarter.
UH played its signature style of defense in the second quarter to cut the deficit it was facing. Blair and Hill combined for 13 of the Cougars 15 second quarter points. Hill tied things 20-20, after stealing the ball and converting it into two points. Blair secured three second quarter steals to anchor the Cougars on the defensive end as Houston trailed 26-31 at the half.
The Cougars continued to battle as they chipped away at the Cincinnati lead. Empty possessions plagued UH, by the team still managed to outscore the Bearcats 7-5 before a timeout was called. Houston battled back, not allowing easy baskets from the Bearcats and getting going from long-range. As time winded down the ball was in Blair's hands, she passed to Onyeje for a three-pointer at the buzzer to tie things up 45-45 as both teams headed to the fourth quarter.
Early turnovers plagued the Cougars in the final frame in addition to missed shots. UH shot 27.8 percent from the field in the fourth quarter, to Cincinnati's 55.6 percent, ultimately falling to Cincinnati in its regular-season finale.
