HOUSTON – The University of Houston women's basketball team fell short in a 61-39 loss to No. 2 UCF in the semifinals the 2021 Air Force Reserve American Athletic Conference Championships.
Laila Blair led the Cougars in scoring with 11 points as Britney Onyeje posted a team-high six rebounds.
Houston couldn't get shots to fall, shooting 26.4 from the field, including 12.5 percent from behind the three-point line. After scoring the first bucket of the game, an 8-0 run from UCF gave the Knights the lead and the Cougars were not able to get it back.
The deficit the Cougars faced only widened in the second quarter when they were outscored 22-7 in the frame. Blair and Patterson paced UH in the third quarter as the squad turned things up on both ends. The duo combined for 12 of the UH's 13 third quarter points, as Houston outscored UCF 13-11. Defensively, Houston held UCF scoreless for over five minutes before both teams headed into the final ten minutes of play.
Aggressive play down the stretch would not be enough as the Cougars offensive struggles continued in the fourth quarter, closing out the game with four field goals.
Houston will now look towards Selection Monday when the field of 64 is announced for the 2021 NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament. Houston holds a 16-7 record, including a 12-4 mark in conference play. Houston sits at 51 in the NET rankings with marquee wins over Oklahoma, Auburn, SFA and USF.
