Sophomore outside hitter averaged 5.75 kills per set
HOUSTON – After helping lead the University of Houston Volleyball team to an undefeated week, sophomore outside hitter Abbie Jackson was named The American Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Â
On the week, Jackson guided Houston's offense, leading the Cougars to a 2-0 record against Tulane, having averaged 5.75 kills per set. In her eight sets played, the Gig Harbor, Wash., native totaled 46 kills, bringing her average to 6.00 kills a set during conference play, a mark that leads all players.
Â
Jackson began the week putting down 26 kills off a career-high .418 hitting percentage, having recorded just three hitting errors in 55 attempts. She then followed that performance with another 20 kills to sweep the season series against the Green Wave, marking her third consecutive 20-kill outing.
Â
The award marks the second of Jackson's career, as she is the third Cougar to win a Player of the Week honor this season for Houston. Junior libero Torie Frederick and sophomore Rachel Tullos previously won Defensive Player of the Week.
Â
Seeing her name on this week's accolade list as well was junior middle blocker Isabel Theut, earning a spot on the honor roll. Theut finished the week leading the Cougars with 1.75 blocks. In Sunday's contest against Tulane, Theut posted a career-high 11 blocks, tying Tullos for most blocks by a Cougar this season. The 11 blocks are also tied for fifth-most in program history for blocks in a four-set match.Â
Â
Up next, Houston continues its four-match homestand when it faces Texas Tech inside the Athletics/Alumni Center on Thursday and Friday. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
