The Cougars tabbed a 130.5 against the Aggies to open up the 2021-22 season
HOUSTON – Abbie Alvarez and Marina Ortega clocked first place finishes in the Cougars' first meet of the season against Texas A&M on Thursday at the CRWC Natatorium.
"I am really please and I thought the women did a great job of coming together as a team and working together," Houston head coach Tanica Jamison said. "We are looking forward to the Rice Invitational next week and then Arkansas after that. We had a few freshmen that stood out and some of our returners but overall we had a lot of great performances from a lot of our swimmers."
In Tanica Jamison's first meet as the Cougars' new head swimming coach, she led the team to a 130.5 total score while the Aggies topped them at 163.5.
Alvarez, only a freshman, claimed the top spots in the 200 breast clocking a 2:19.48 and Aubre McKinnon followed placing second in the event with a time of 2:20.49. Alvarez also finished second in the 200 IM with a time of 2:06.55 and sixth in the 200 fly at 2:06.34.
Sophomore Marina Ortega also grabbed the top spot in the 200 IM with a time of 2:04.38. Ortega rounded out her performance with a third-place finish in the 100 fly as well as a fourth-place finish in the 200 free at 1:54.33.
For the divers, senior Katie Deininger took third in both the 3-meter and 1-meter with a 288.90 and 288.45, respectively. Sophomore Emilia Waters added a fourth-place finish with a 264.53 score in the 1-meter while senior Chase Farris tabbed the fourth place spot at 281.63 in the 3-meter.

Houston closes out the month of October when it takes on Arkansas at 11 a.m., Oct. 30, in Fayetteville, Ark.
