Houston Soccer Defeats Tulsa to Earn Conference Tournament Bye Week

Cougars break record for most season wins in program history
HOUSTON – Houston Soccer (13-4-2, 5-2-1 AAC) concluded its 2021 regular season schedule with a 2-0 victory over Tulsa (6-9-2, 1-6-1 AAC) on Thursday at Hurricane Stadium in Tulsa, Okla.
The Cougars clinched its second American Athletic Conference berth since entering the conference in 2013 last Sunday against Cincinnati. Thursday's win against Tulsa set a new record for Houston who accomplished its most season wins in program history with 13. For the first time, Houston will be entering postseason competition in a No. 2 seed earning a bye week for the start of the conference tournament.
Houston survived extreme wind speeds throughout the match against the Golden Hurricanes. Following a scoreless 0-0 first half, the Cougars entered the second half of the match ready to fight for a win to wrap up regular season competition. In the 57th minute, freshman Samantha Wiehe broke the ice with a goal to put Houston in the lead.
Redshirt senior Mia Brascia saw her second goal of the season, and second score of the match, in the 79th minute. Brascia sent a corner kick into the net to put Houston up 2-0 sealing in the victory for the Cougars.
Holding the Golden Hurricanes scoreless, goalkeeper Mikaela Gracia earned her ninth shutout of the season. She will move up in the national rankings after being tied for 13th with eight this past week.
In The American conference rankings, Houston is behind South Florida who currently holds the top seed. Earlier in the season, the Cougars tied the Bulls 1-1 in Tampa.
Also for the first time in program history, Houston is receiving votes in the national rankings. The Cougars have continuously set and broken program records this season and look to continue doing so in postseason competition.
UP NEXT
The Cougars will face the winner of Memphis and UCF on Thursday, Nov. 4. The Tigers and Knights will go head-to-head on Sunday to see who will advance to take on Houston. During regular season competition, Houston defeated both Memphis and UCF at the Carl Lewis International Complex, 1-0.
