Houston Soccer Prepares for Thursday Semifinal

Cougars travel to Tampa for conference tournament
HOUSTON – Houston Soccer (13-4-2, 5-2-1 AAC) will travel to Tampa to take on Memphis (12-4-1, 5-3-0 AAC) on Thursday at 3 p.m. for the semifinal round of the American Athletic Conference Tournament.
Following a 2-0 victory against Tulsa last Thursday, Houston secured the No. 2 seed receiving a bye for the upcoming quarterfinal round. The Cougars set a new program record for its most wins in a season to see its second visit to the tournament since falling to UCF in the 2019 quarterfinals.
In the national rankings, Houston is receiving votes while also holding the third-place spot in the South Region by United Soccer Coaches. Individual Cougars have also seen their names in the weekly national rankings. This includes redshirt freshman Nadia Kamassah who is tied for 11th with five game-winning goals and goalkeeper Mikaela Gracia who is tied for seventh with nine shutouts on the season.
Houston looks to make history in Tampa with hopes of advancing on Thursday to see championship play on Sunday.
The winner of Thursday's match will face the victor of USF and SMU on Sunday for The American tournament title.
SERIES HISTORY
Houston holds a 4-16-1 all-time series record against Memphis. The Cougars hosted the Tigers at the Carl Lewis International Complex on Oct. 21 which resulted in a 1-0 win for Houston. In the 88th minute, freshman Nadia Kamassah scored an unassisted game-winning goal to secure the third nationally-ranked defeat for the Cougars in the 2021 regular season.
The victory was the first over Memphis since 2012 when Houston won 1-0 in Tennessee.
