Cougars fight hard before coming up short in 85th minute
HOUSTON – Houston Soccer (13-5-2, 5-2-1 AAC) fell to Memphis (13-5-2, 5-2-1 AAC), 0-1 on Thursday in the semifinal round of the American Athletic Conference Tournament in Tampa at Corbett Soccer Stadium.
Houston clinched its second American Athletic Conference berth since entering the conference in 2013 on Oct. 24 against Cincinnati and set a new record of season wins with 13 after defeating Tulsa last week. Houston received a No. 2 berth for the conference tournament, resulting in a quarterfinal bye, which was another first for the program.
Â
The Cougars fought hard for 90 minutes trying to get a score on the board with hopes of advancing to the championship game. Memphis found its opening in the 85th minute with the lone goal of the match. Unfortunately, the Cougars were unable to answer in the five remaining minutes of regulation.
Â
Houston and Memphis tied in the total shots taken category with seven apiece. The midfield duo of redshirt freshman Caitlyn Matthews and redshirt senior Mia Brascia led the team in shots with two each.
Â
The trio of senior Emma Clarke, Cassidy Formanek, and graduate student Taylor Garza-Freeman put up impressive defense on the backline for Houston with Clarke playing the entire duration of regulation. Formanek was also on the field for the majority of regulation before suffering an injury in the final minutes.
Â
