Unassisted goal by Kamassah in 88th minute seals the win
HOUSTON – Houston Soccer left the Carl Lewis International Complex on Thursday with a big upset 1-0 win over No. 23 nationally-ranked Memphis (10-3-1, 4-2-0 AAC). The Cougars improved 11-4-2 on their overall season record, with an American Athletic Conference record of 3-2-1.
Â
After remaining scoreless in the bulk of the match, redshirt freshman Nadia Kamassah saw a lucky unassisted opportunity in the 88th minute. She put the ball in the net to seal the victory for Houston. Kamassah's game-winning score tallied her sixth goal of the season.
Â
"I think we had a good game plan going in," stated Head Coach Diego Bocanegra. "We knew how dangerous they are in the attack, so our game plan was to stay really compact defensively and take our chances attack-wise. I think we made some adjustments in the halftime and think we were the better team in the second half."
Â
In the second half alone, the Cougars out-shot the Tigers 10-3 with Memphis making five saves in comparison to the Houston's one. The shutout brought goalkeeper Mikaela Gracia's tally up to eight clean sheets on the season.
Â
The Cougars were able to rack up their third win over a nationally-ranked opponent in the 2021 season. Memphis was listed this week as the No. 2 seed in The American conference rankings with Houston in the fourth seed. Following two tough previous losses, the Cougars look to move up in the rankings after Thursday's big win.
UP NEXT
