Houston Set to Face ECU on Saturday

Cougars look to secure second straight victory
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Women's Basketball Team returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 16 in Greenville when it faces ECU. Tip-off is slated for 12 p.m. CT on ESPN+
THE 4-1-1
Houston looks to win its second straigh game as it heads to ECU for an American Athletic Conference matchup. The Cougars are led in scoring by Britney Onyeje who averages 10.4 points per game. Bria Patterson and Julia Blackshell-Fair lead UH on the glass, pulling down 5.8 rebounds per game. Julia Blackshell-Fair is the assists leader for the Cougars with 38 this season.
Houston is averaging 68.3 points per game on 39.6 percent shooting from the field and a 30.8 percent mark from beyond the 3-point line. The Cougars allow 68.1 points on defense while letting opponents shoot 39.7 percent and 25.4 percent from the field and beyond the arc, respectively.
Under Coach Hughey, Houston has been one of the most active defensive teams in the country over the past two seasons. The Cougars enter the game with 102 steals this season and 42 blocks, forcing 19.80 turnovers per game.
SCOUTING THE PIRATES
ECU is in its 2nd season under Head Coach Kim McNeill. The Pirates are 5-6 this season and 3-3 in conference play. The team is on a three-game winning streak, most recently falling to UCF in a 51-58 decision. ECU is led in scoring by Lashonda Monk who averages 15.3 points per game. Tiara Chambers averages 6.6 rebounds per game to lead the team in the category. Monk is also the assist leader for ECU with 25 assists this season. ECU averages 58.8 points per game on 35.8 percent shooting from the field, including a 29.4 percent mark from the three-point line.
THE SERIES
Wednesday's meeting is the 23rd meeting between the two teams. Houston leads the series 14-9, winning three of the last five.
BOMBS AWAY
Houston has proven itself to be a threat from behind the three-point line, racking up at least six made three's in all but one game this season. Onyeje is second in The American in made three-pointers this season with 22. The Cougars are 63rd nationally and second in The American in made three-point field goals. This season Houston has 74 made three's this season.
H-TOWN LOCKDOWN DEFENSE
The Cougars have shown that they are not afraid to shoot three-pointers and on the flipside they are one of the best at defending the three-point shot. UH ranks second in the league and 44th nationally in three-point FG defense, holding opponents to 25.4 percent from long-range.
SCOOP 'N SCORE
Houston forced 30 Memphis turnovers, its most since Feb. 18, 2020 when the team forced 23 against Cincinnati. This season UH has earned 74 steals and is averaging 10.2 steals per game. Houston is 42nd in the NCAA in steals per game and second in the league. When it comes to forcing turnovers, Houston is one of the best, averaging 19.80 forced turnovers per game the Cougars are 49th in the NCAA and third in The American in the category.
DEEPER THAN EVER
With is largest roster in recent years, Houston has more than enough options off the bench. The Houston reserves have done their part, accounting for 227 points this season.
