Singles Play Highlights Final Day of TCU Tournament

Cougars win four singles matches
FORT WORTH, Texas – The University of Houston Tennis team concluded its time at the TCU Tournament on Tuesday, winning a total of five contests, including four singles matches.

Freshman Laura Slisane followed her win from Monday and took down Margaret Polk of TCU, winning in dominating fashion (6-2, 6-1). Slisane was joined by senior Phonexay Chitdara, sophomore Manasi Reddy and freshman classmate Gabriela Giraldo as those who won their singles competitions against Central Arkansas.

Chitdara collected her second singles win of the season, defeating Fuka Nonoyama in straight sets (6-2, 6-3), while Reddy shut out Paulina Engback in the first set of her 6-0, 6-3 victory. Giraldo capped things off with another sweeping singles victory for the Cougars, taking down Mei Ishimura 6-4, 6-2.

The doubles pair of junior Sophie Gerits and Slisane carried their momentum from Day 3 into today, winning another thriller, 7-5, to defeat Jaeun Lee and Sumomo Hamanaga of Central Arkansas.

Houston will be back in action on Sunday at noon when the Cougars face McNeese in their home opener at the Barbara Wallace Winston Tennis Facility. Fans wishing to attend the match will be required to wear a mask or face covering and socially distance themselves at all times.
