Strong Start Leads to Win Over McNeese

Cougars sweep Cowgirls and win, 7-0
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Tennis program opened its home slate with a thrilling, 7-0, victory over McNeese on Sunday afternoon. Â

With the win, the Cougars improve their all-time record to 8-0 against the Cowgirls. Sunday's victory also marked Houston's fourth consecutive home-opening win.

The Cougars wasted no time jumping out to the early lead, as a 6-1 doubles win from seniors Mimi Kendall-Woseley and Phonexay Chitdara gave Houston its first victory of the day. Following a 6-2 win from freshman Blanca Cortijo Parreno and sophomore Azul Pedemonti, the Cougars finished off the doubles sweep with freshmen Laura Slisane and Gabriela Giraldo winning a thrilling 7-5 contest.

In singles play, Pedemonti (6-1, 6-2) and Cortijo Parreño (6-1, 6-0) were the first to complete their wins, which extended Houston's overall lead to 3-0. After Slisane's (6-3, 6-3) victory, Chitdara followed her with a (6-2, 6-0) sweep of her own to give the Cougars a 5-0 advantage.

Giraldo then collected another singles win for Houston, as her (6-4, 6-0) win put the Cougars in the driver's seat to complete the perfect day, which Kendall-Woseley capped off with her (6-2, 6-0) win.

Houston returns to competition on Monday, Jan. 18 when the Cougars travel to College Station, Texas, for a matchup with Texas A&M at noon. Fans will be able to follow the match by viewing live stats here or watching live here.
