Cougars tip off vs. Bearcats at noon, Sunday, inside the Fertitta Center in pivotal match-up
HOUSTON – In a battle between two of the American Athletic Conference's top teams, the University of Houston Men's Basketball program plays host to Cincinnati at noon, Sunday, inside the Fertitta Center.
Both teams enter this weekend's game at 11-4 to tie with Tulsa atop the latest league standings. Both teams also will be well rested with no mid-week games ahead of Sunday's contest.
The 25th-ranked Cougars will have revenge on their minds after Cincinnati claimed a 64-62 victory inside Fifth Third Arena on Feb. 1 in the first of two meetings during the regular season.
Houston looks to bounce back following a tough 60-59 loss at Memphis on Feb 22. The Cougars have lost four American games this season by a combined six points.
Against Memphis, redshirt freshman guard Caleb Mills led all players with 21 points on 7-of-14 shooting, while fellow freshman Marcus Sasser totaled 18 points, thanks to four 3-pointers, with six rebounds.
This season, Mills leads the Cougars with 13.2 points per game. With 370 points in 28 games to date, the Arden, N.C,, native recently moved past Houston greats Clyde Drexler (356 pts, 1980-81) and Michael Young (361 pts, 1980-81) into sixth on the school's single-season freshman scoring list.
Mills is looking to become only the second freshman in school history to lead the Cougars in scoring for a season, joining Houston great Rob Williams (16.3 ppg, 1979-80).
Sophomore guard Nate Hinton paces the team and ranks fourth in the league with 9.0 rebounds per game. Junior guard DeJon Jarreau averages a team-high 3.9 assists per game and recently became the 19th player in school history with multiple 100+ assist seasons during his career.
Jarreau dished out 100 assists in his first season at Houston in 2018-19 and has recorded a team-high 102 dimes this season.
Sunday's game has sold out with UH Student Tickets still available through the claim process. This marks the sixth sellout in Fertitta Center in 2019-20 and the 15th in the facility's young history.
